FISU - Studenten WM in Johannisburg 2024 (Berichte: Leila Hirt, Stella Kaufmann, Tate Harms, Sven Stettler, Miguel Mathis)

Tag 1 & 2 - Anreise

Tag 3 - Wettkampf Einzel
Day 1 of the singles competition started with the men. Miguel had a very close first game and managed to win 14:12. After losing the second game, he needed to change something and pulled through to the next round in 4 games. Tate played a very solid first game to win 11:5. His opponent only realized in the second game that Tate unfortunately didn't move that well to the front of the court and made him run diagonals. Unfortunately Tate couldn't find a way out and lost in 4. He then had to retire because of his knee to prevent it from getting worse. Sven played a good first first game to win 11:5. He then lost his length and got punished by losing the second. After finding back his game he managed to win and move to round 3 with Miguel. Next up were the women. Stella started with a good first game but couldn't quite finish it on top. She got the upper hand in the second game though to even it up to 1:1. Unfortunately Stella didn't manage to keep up that level of hard hitting and lost in 4. It was a bit different for Leila. She started off very well and won the first game quite comfortably. She after lost her accuracy and lost in 4 as well.

The matches for a place in the quarters for the men started with Miguel. He had a tough opponent but Miguel showed some good squash. It went back and fourth into the fifth game, where Miguel after a big show and tough battle closely lost 8:11. Sven played the number 3 seed. There were patches of good squash towards the third game, which was a bit too late. He lost in 3.

Tag 4:
Day 2 was for Sven to start. He played some good squash but closely lost the first game. He used all his strength to somehow win the third game for the match to continue. The fourth game was very even but Sven couldn't get the upper hand and lost in 4. Miguel was on next playing a very tricky opponent. He was struggling a little, because the other guy had some very neat racket skills. After losing the first two games Miguel started to show his skills too and won the third easily. His opponent then moved up the court a bit more to keep Miguel behind and used his soft hands to win the match. Miguel lost in 4 as well.

The women started in the afternoon. Stella started off well and won the first game. She then lost her length and so the second. After finding her length again and moving quicker to the T she managed to get her first win under her belt and won in 4. Leila played at the same time. It was exactly the other way round for her. She lost the first game, backed it up with some good squash to win the second. Unfortunately she couldn't quite keep that up and lost in 4.

Tag 5:
Wednesday meant the last day of the individuals event. On the men’s side we got to witness a Swiss clash between Miguel and Sven. After a close battle in the first game, Miguel came out on top winning the next two games. He then went on to play the top Indian seed, and after a tough first game, he decided to conserve his energy for the teams event the next day, and throw the rest of the match. On the women’s side of the draw, Stella lost to an inform 9 to 16 seed from India in the morning, but came back for redemption in the afternoon winning three love against a Singaporean girl. Leila won against China three love in the morning, and she beat a higher seeded South African girl in a tight five gamer later that afternoon to win both her matches. That evening we were lucky enough to get invited to the cultural dinner. We ate at Chief’s Boma Restaurant which offers traditional African cuisine from North African dishes Moroccan dishes to Melktert from the Cape. They also had their famous ‘Shisa Nyama’ grill where the chef prepared carefully selected game meats like Springbok, Impala, Boerewors, and Ostrich. Antonio and Miguel especially enjoyed the Springbok and Ostrich – both of which were extremely tender and succulent.

Tag 6 - Wettkampf Team
Thursday was the first day of the teams event! Switzerland was seeded to play an in form India Thursday morning. The order for the day was Stella then Miguel (both first string) then Leila and Sven (both second string). The inform India was too much for all players to handle, and Switzerland unfortunately took the loss, but ready to rebound against Japan the very next day.

Tag 7
